Unlike Colorado elk, there are no over-the-counter deer licenses in Colorado. Every mule deer tag — archery, muzzleloader, or rifle — is issued through the draw. Plan around the April 7 primary draw deadline. Confirm all fees at cpw.state.co.us before applying.

Why Colorado for Mule Deer

Colorado is the defining state for mule deer hunting in the American West. The combination of high-country habitat in the Rocky Mountains, vast public land access, and decades of research-driven management by Colorado Parks and Wildlife has produced consistently strong deer numbers and a higher volume of trophy-class bucks than virtually any other state. Units like the Book Cliffs (GMUs 40 and 41) and the West Elk Mountains regularly produce Boone and Crockett typical mule deer. Even general-season units in the right GMU can hold deer quality that competes with limited-entry units in neighboring states.

The tradeoff compared to states like Wyoming or Nevada is the draw competition. Colorado's mule deer draw is fully competitive — all licenses, including archery and the most general rifle seasons, require successfully drawing a tag. The state's preference point system means that serious trophy hunters often spend several years accumulating points before targeting their preferred GMU. But for hunters willing to work the system methodically, the result is access to some of the largest, most public mule deer country in North America.

2026 Season Dates

Colorado's Big Game Season Structure (BGSS) for 2025–2029 standardizes season dates, giving hunters predictable planning windows across a five-year cycle.

Archery Season

September 2–30, 2026. The archery season opens the mule deer calendar in Colorado, covering both the pre-rut period and the early stages of buck velvet shed. Bucks are still in bachelor groups early in the season and transition to pre-rut scraping activity by mid-to-late September.

Muzzleloader Season

September 12–20, 2026. The muzzleloader season overlaps with archery and is draw-only. Colorado prohibits crossbows during the archery season; similarly, archery equipment may not be used during muzzleloader seasons. Muzzleloaders must be single-shot, muzzle-loading firearms using black powder or approved substitute. Scopes may be restricted depending on your specific hunt code — check your license carefully.

Rifle Seasons

  • 1st Rifle: October 14–18, 2026 (5 days, limited draw)
  • 2nd Rifle: October 24 – November 1, 2026 (9 days)
  • 3rd Rifle: November 7–15, 2026 (9 days)
  • 4th Rifle: November 18–22, 2026 (5 days, typically fewer tags)

The 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons cover Colorado's peak mule deer rut window — one of the best times to be on the mountain. Bucks are mobile, focused on breeding activity, and more susceptible to hunting pressure than at any other point in the season.

4th Rifle Season new hunts for 2026: CPW has added 4th rifle season deer hunts in GMUs 61 and 62, providing additional late-season opportunity in those units.

Plains Rifle Seasons

  • Plains Early Rifle: October 24 – November 3, 2026
  • Plains Late Rifle: December 1–14, 2026

Colorado's 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons overlap the peak mule deer rut—plan draw applications by the April 7 primary deadline for premium GMUs like the Book Cliffs

Plains deer licenses are generally drawn but may have Season Choice options in select units.

Fluorescent orange: Required for all rifle season hunters, including archery and muzzleloader hunters who are also present on the landscape during any open rifle season.

The Draw-Only Structure: No OTC Mule Deer

Unlike Colorado elk, where some OTC options remain, all Colorado mule deer licenses — archery, muzzleloader, and all four rifle seasons — are issued through the draw. There are no walk-in or over-the-counter deer tags in Colorado. This includes both limited draw and list-based licenses. Missing the draw deadlines means waiting until leftover tags are available on August 4 or the following year.

License Types: List A and List B

Colorado classifies deer licenses as List A (typically buck licenses, higher demand) or List B (typically doe licenses, lower demand). Hunters can hold one List A and one List B license, or two List B licenses. Hunters may not hold more than one antlered deer license per year.

2026 Unit Changes

  • GMU 682 has been removed from the general DAU deer hunt codes — it now has a separate private-land-only hunt structure. If you previously hunted GMU 682 on a general license, confirm the new unit hunt codes before applying.
  • New 1st rifle season deer hunts added in GMUs 75/751 and 77/78/771.
  • New 4th rifle season deer hunts added in GMUs 61 and 62.

Costs and Fees

Colorado deer licenses require a qualifying license before application for draw hunts. However, note that OTC licenses (including leftover deer tags purchased after draws) do NOT require a qualifying license — a practical consideration for late-season shopping on August 4.

ItemResidentNonresident
Annual Small Game Qualifying License$38.49$104.86
Application Fee (per species)$8.93$11.49
Habitat Stamp (ages 18–64)$12.76$12.76
Deer License (draw)Varies by unit/type~$506.92 (verify at CPW)

Preference points: Hunters who don't draw earn a preference point for future draws. Points are free for Colorado residents but cost $100 per species for nonresidents. The system rewards multi-year applicants — more points mean better odds in future draws.

CWD in Colorado (Deer)

There is no mandatory CWD testing for deer in 2026 — a notable change from the elk program, which does have mandatory testing in select GMUs. Voluntary CWD testing remains available at check stations across the state ($25 fee). Carcass movement restrictions still apply based on the zone where harvest occurred. Check current zone maps and transport rules at cpw.state.co.us/cwd.

Where to Hunt Colorado Mule Deer

The Book Cliffs (GMUs 40 and 41)

Colorado's most famous trophy mule deer country. The Book Cliffs produce Boone and Crockett typical deer at a frequency that no other region in the state consistently matches. Access is primarily through BLM land in a dramatic canyon-and-mesa landscape east of Grand Junction. These units take significant preference points to draw — most hunters spend 5–10+ years accumulating points for GMU 40 or 41 — but the payoff reflects the investment.

The West Elk Mountains (GMUs 53–55)

The West Elk Wilderness and surrounding drainages in Gunnison and Delta counties hold excellent mule deer numbers in rugged, high-elevation terrain. This region also overlaps with strong elk habitat — hunters who draw a combined deer and elk tag here maximize the value of a single trip.

The San Juan Mountains (Southwest Colorado)

GMUs in the San Juan range (Montrose, San Miguel, Ouray, and surrounding counties) provide consistent quality across multiple units, ranging from wilderness backpack hunting in the Weminuche to more accessible forest road country.

The Flat Tops (GMUs 24, 25, 26, 34)

Northwest Colorado's Flat Tops country — White River and Routt National Forests — holds solid mule deer numbers and strong public access. This is a more approachable multi-day hunt than the extreme trophy units and offers genuine opportunity for hunters earlier in their point accumulation journey.

Rut Timing in Colorado

PhaseTiming
Velvet shed, bucks regroupingEarly September
Pre-rut scraping and rubbingLate September – early October
Seeking and chasing (pre-rut peak)October 20–30
Peak rut (lockdown)November 1–15
Post-rutLate November

Colorado's peak mule deer rut falls squarely within the 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons — one of the primary reasons those seasons are the most competitive to draw. The pre-rut overlap with archery season in late September also produces excellent early-season calling and rattling opportunities for bowhunters.

Nonresident Mule Deer Hunting in Colorado

How to Hunt Mule Deer in Colorado as a Nonresident

Colorado is fully accessible to nonresidents through the draw — no guided hunt requirement, no OTC alternative, just the draw process.

What nonresidents need:

  • Qualifying small game license: $104.86 (required before applying for draw)
  • Habitat Stamp: $12.76 (auto-added for ages 18–64)
  • Application fee: $11.49 per species (nonrefundable)
  • Deer license: ~$506.92 (draw or leftover — confirm exact current fee at CPW)
  • Hunter Education Certificate: Required if born on or after January 1, 1949
  • SSN or ITIN: Required for hunters age 12+

Strategy for nonresidents: Colorado's draw is competitive but workable. Most hunters entering the system build preference points for 3–7 years before targeting their preferred GMU. For hunters who want immediate access, leftover tags sold August 4 occasionally include quality rifle season licenses in solid units — set a calendar reminder for 9 a.m. MT on August 4 and check the CPW website as soon as leftover lists go live.
