Why Kentucky for Whitetail Deer
Kentucky packs Bluegrass limestone pasture, western farm country, and Appalachian ridges into one compact season calendar. Agricultural counties grow bigger deer. Eastern mountains offer more public land through Daniel Boone National Forest and KDFWR wildlife management areas.
Archery from the first Saturday in September through Martin Luther King Jr. Day covers pre-rut, peak rut, and a long late season after guns close. Four zones set antlerless opportunity by density. 2026 reassigned counties, so last year’s zone for a given county may be wrong.
Kentucky’s herd is a restoration story: nearly gone in 1915, about 35,000 in the 1970s, and an annual harvest near 150,000 today, per KDFWR.
When Is Kentucky Deer Season in 2026-27?
Shooting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
Archery and Crossbow
- Archery: September 5, 2026 – January 18, 2027
- Youth/senior crossbow: same dates as archery (resident hunters 65+ and youth under 16)
- Crossbow (all hunters): September 19, 2026 – January 18, 2027
Bows are legal during crossbow and firearms seasons. During any firearms season, bowhunters still wear hunter orange and follow that season’s rules.
Youth Gun and Free Youth Weekend
- Youth-only modern firearms: October 10–18, 2026 (not a two-day weekend). Youth may use firearms or any other legal method statewide. Ages 12–15 need a hunting license and deer permit. Under 12 do not.
- Free youth weekend: December 26–27, 2026. Resident and nonresident youth 15 and under, accompanied by an adult, may hunt without a hunting license or deer permit. Bag limits and other deer rules still apply. Youth may take antlered or antlerless deer regardless of zone, within statewide limits.
Muzzleloader
- Early: October 17–18, 2026
- Late: December 12–20, 2026
Bows and crossbows are legal during muzzleloader seasons.
Modern Gun
November 14–29, 2026 — 16 days, second Saturday in November through the following Sunday. Muzzleloaders, bows, and crossbows are legal. Hunter orange is required.
CWD Antlerless Season

September 25–28, 2026, antlerless only, in Zone 1–3 counties inside the CWD Surveillance Zone. Firearms, bows, or crossbows. No antlered deer. Zone bag limits still apply. See KDFWR’s CWD page for sampling.
KDFWR has also floated extra antlerless firearm seasons in some counties; those were pending when the printed guide went out. Verify online.
How Do Kentucky’s Four Deer Zones Work?
One antlered deer statewide, any method, any zone (a bonus antlered deer is possible only on certain federal areas such as Reelfoot NWR, Fort Campbell, Fort Knox, and Blue Grass Army Depot).
| Zone | Bag |
|---|---|
| 1 | Unlimited antlerless deer with the statewide permit plus additional permits |
| 2 | Up to four deer total |
| 3 | Up to four deer; only one antlerless with a firearm or air gun (extra does by bow/crossbow) |
| 4 | Up to two deer, only one antlerless; no antlerless harvest during modern gun, early muzzleloader, or the first six days of late muzzleloader |
Button bucks without readily visible antlers count as antlerless. There is no daily bag limit. A hunter may take the full zone allowance in each zone they hunt, but still only one visible-antlered deer for the year.
The statewide deer permit covers up to four deer. An additional deer permit ($15.86) is good for two more deer, still inside zone and one-buck rules. Zone 1 hunters who want more than four does buy extra permits.
Check the current map. Counties moved in the 2026 regulation update. The printed guide marks zone-change counties; do not copy a 2025 county list.
What Licenses and Fees Do You Need?
Hunters 16 and older need an annual hunting license and a deer permit, unless exempt.
| License / Permit | Resident | Nonresident |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Hunting License | $28.54 | $169.12 |
| Statewide Deer Permit (up to four deer, one antlered) | $37.00 | $248.40 |
| Additional Deer Permit (two deer) | $15.86 | $15.86 |
| Youth Hunting License (12–15) | $6.34 | $10.57 |
| Youth Deer Permit (12–15) | $10.57 | $15.86 |
| Sportsman’s License (hunt, fish, deer, turkey, KY migratory bird, trout) | $100.42 | Not available |
| 1-Day Hunting | $7.40 | $26.43 (not valid for deer) |
| 7-Day Hunting | — | $68.71 (not valid for deer) |
The Sportsman’s License does not include additional deer permits, elk, bear, trapping, or a federal duck stamp. First-time-buyer Sportsman’s is $37 for residents.
Nonresidents have no short-term deer option and no Sportsman’s bundle. Budget $417.52 before extra doe permits.
Kentucky adjusts many fees with CPI. The license year runs March 1 through the last day of February.
Hunter education: required for hunters age 12 and older born on or after January 1, 1975. Carry the card. A one-time Temporary Hunter Education Exemption Permit exists (free for a limited time). Under 12 do not need a license or hunter education card.
Resident landowners, spouses, and dependent children hunting their own farm, and qualifying resident tenants, are license-exempt but still follow seasons, zones, harvest logs, and Telecheck. Nonresident landowners still buy nonresident licenses and deer permits.
Where to Hunt Kentucky Whitetails
Western Agricultural Counties
Row crop and pasture country with strong nutrition. Mix private farms and WMAs. Many of these counties sit in Zone 1 or 2.
Bluegrass
Inner Bluegrass limestone, pasture, and woodlots. Healthy deer in a landscape better known for horses.
Eastern Kentucky / Appalachia
Lower density, steeper ground, more public land on Daniel Boone National Forest and state WMAs. Much of this country is Zone 3 or 4, including no antlerless harvest during modern gun in Zone 4.
Public Land
WMAs often have quota hunts or dates that differ from statewide seasons. Land Between the Lakes and Peabody WMAs need extra user permits. Always read the WMA page.
When Is the Kentucky Rut?
| Phase | Timing |
|---|---|
| Scraping and rubbing | Late October |
| Pre-rut | Early November |
| Peak rut | About November 8–18 |
| Post-rut | Late November |
Peak breeding overlaps the November 14–29 modern gun season.
How Do Telecheck and CWD Work?
Fill out a Harvest Log before you move the carcass. Telecheck by midnight the day the deer is recovered at 800-245-4263 or through My Profile at fw.ky.gov. Record the confirmation number on the log.
If the head or hide comes off before Telecheck, keep proof of sex. A handmade carcass tag (name, address, phone) is required if the deer leaves your possession.
In a CWD Surveillance Zone, extra rules apply: transport the whole carcass or whole head, and take the Telecheck number to an authorized check station during advertised periods. Confirm the current zone map at fw.ky.gov.
How Do You Hunt Whitetail Deer in Kentucky as a Nonresident?
No draw for standard deer tags.
What nonresidents age 16+ need:
- Annual hunting license: $169.12
- Statewide deer permit: $248.40
- Hunter education if born on or after January 1, 1975
- Picture ID (or other accepted proof with the Customer ID)
Do not buy a 1-day or 7-day hunting license for deer.
Check the 2026 zone for your county before you buy extra $15.86 additional deer permits.
Nonresident youth 15 and under can hunt the October youth-only gun season (license/permit rules by age) and the December 26–27 free weekend with no license or deer permit.
Buy licenses at fw.ky.gov, in My Profile, by phone at 800-858-1549, or from vendors.
