Missouri Whitetail Deer Hunting 2026: Season Dates, New Buck Limit, License Costs & Nonresident Guide

Missouri deer hunting in 2026-27 still has a long archery season and a compact November firearms portion (November 14–24). The big change for out-of-state hunters is the one-antlered-deer limit on regular nonresident permits. A firearms any-deer or archer’s permit is $360. Antler-point restrictions are gone statewide. Always confirm at MDC.

Why Missouri for Whitetail Deer

Missouri sits between northern row-crop country, Missouri River bottoms, and the Ozark Highlands. That mix is why the state draws both farm-country trophy hunters and public-land backpackers. MDC conservation areas plus Mark Twain National Forest give DIY hunters a real map without a lease.

Nonresident participation has grown fast enough that the Conservation Commission cut the regular nonresident buck limit for 2026 and teed up a public-land add-on permit for 2027. If you hunted Missouri on two regular buck tags in past years, that playbook is closed.

When Is Missouri Deer Season in 2026-27?

Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Archery

• Early: September 15 – November 13, 2026
• Late: November 25, 2026 – January 15, 2027

A Resident or Nonresident Archer’s Hunting Permit is valid for two deer during archery, but only one antlered deer may be taken before November 14. Extra antlerless deer need archery antlerless permits in open counties. Residents may take two antlered deer across archery and firearms combined; regular nonresidents may take one.

The resident archer’s permit ($22) also covers small game and selling furbearers taken by hunting. The nonresident archer’s permit ($360) covers two archery deer and small game except furbearers. Fall turkey is a separate permit.

Firearms Portions

• Early antlerless: October 9–11, 2026, in participating counties
• Early youth: October 24–25, 2026, statewide, ages 6–15
• November portion: November 14–24, 2026 — the main modern-gun hunt
• Late youth: November 27–29, 2026
• Late antlerless: December 5–13, 2026, in participating counties
• Alternative methods: December 26, 2026 – January 5, 2027

Only one antlered deer may be taken during all firearms portions combined, even for residents. County maps set how many firearms antlerless permits you may fill.

Mandatory CWD sampling: If you tag a deer in a designated county on November 14–15, 2026, take the deer or the head to a listed station the day of harvest. Beginning in 2026, MDC rotates mandatory sampling through every county on a four-year cycle.

What Changed for 2026-27

MDC’s booklet lists these as new:

• Antler-point restriction removed in all counties
• Regular nonresident permits valid for one antlered deer
• CWD Management Zone removed (other CWD rules still apply in some counties)
• CWD firearms portion eliminated
• Permit prices increased
• Year-round ban on grain, salt, minerals, and other consumable attractants in counties within 10 miles of a CWD detection

Baiting while hunting is illegal statewide. An area stays baited for 10 days after the bait is gone. Harvested crop fields without added grain are legal. Mineral blocks with grain are not. Minerals and salt are not allowed on conservation areas.

What Happened to the Nonresident Buck Limit — and What Is Coming?

2026: One Buck on Regular Permits

The Conservation Commission cut the regular nonresident antlered limit from two to one for 2026. That applies to the Nonresident Firearms Any-Deer Permit and/or Nonresident Archer’s Hunting Permit, combined across seasons.

Nonresident landowners who qualify keep a two-antlered combined limit on landowner permits, with only one of those during firearms season and only one during early archery before November 14. Landowner permits are valid only on qualifying property. Hunt elsewhere on regular nonresident permits and you are back to one antlered deer on those regular permits; the combined landowner-plus-regular cap is still two.

Deer taken on a managed deer hunting permit do not count toward the antlered season limits.

2027: Proposed Public-Land Permit

The Commission gave initial approval to a $165 Nonresident Public Land Deer Hunting Permit for 2027. It would sit on top of existing deer permits and would be required to pursue, take, possess, or transport deer on Missouri public land (conservation areas and other state and federal public lands). Private-land hunts would not need that add-on.

Public comment ran in summer 2026, with final consideration scheduled for the September 11, 2026 open meeting. Confirm at mdc.mo.gov whether that permit received final approval before you budget a 2027 public-land trip.

MDC has also discussed a longer-term nonresident draw. Nothing in the 2026 booklet replaces over-the-counter standard permits for this fall.

What Permits and Fees Do You Need?

Missouri does not require a general hunting license for deer. Species permits are the license and the tag.

Youth 6–15 pay reduced rates (resident firearms any-deer $9.75; nonresident firearms any-deer $9.75; nonresident archer’s $11). Nonresidents must buy the parent any-deer or archer’s permit before buying antlerless permits.

Hunter education: required unless you were born before January 1, 1967, or you hunt under youth/apprentice rules with a qualified adult.

Telecheck: Notch the permit immediately. Telecheck online, in the MO Hunting app, or by phone at 800-314-6828 (6 a.m.–10 p.m.). You must Telecheck a deer before it leaves the county of harvest or by 10 p.m. the day of harvest, whichever comes first. Write or save the confirmation number. The deer must stay intact or field-dressed until it is Telechecked.

Where to Hunt Missouri Whitetails

Northern Agricultural Country

Row-crop counties produce the strongest nutrition and often the best antler quality. Mix private farms with conservation areas. Pressure is usually lighter than famous Ozark tracts.

Ozark Highlands

South-central and southern Missouri: timber, hills, and more public land through Mark Twain National Forest and MDC areas. Density is generally lower. Getting off the road matters.

Missouri River Bottoms

Bottomland farms and timber in a tighter corridor. Productive, accessible, and competitive on opening weekend.

Public Land

MDC manages about 1,000 conservation areas. Many allow deer hunting; more than 300 offer camping. Read the area-specific rules in the back of the 2026 booklet — several conservation-area deer rules changed this year. If the 2027 public-land permit is finalized, budget $165 extra for those hunts.

When Is the Missouri Rut?

Peak breeding overlaps the November 14–24 firearms portion, which is why opening weekend still sets the tone for the state.

How Do You Hunt Whitetail Deer in Missouri as a Nonresident?

Standard 2026 permits are over the counter. No lottery except managed hunts (apply in July).

What nonresidents age 16+ need:

• Firearms any-deer permit ($360) and/or Archer’s permit ($360)
• Antlerless permits ($34) in open counties, after buying the parent permit
• Hunter education if born on or after January 1, 1967

One-buck reality: plan the trip around a single antlered deer unless you qualify for landowner permits. You can still fill antlerless tags where the county map allows.

2027 watch: a $165 public-land permit on top of the $360 deer permit would put a public-land firearms hunt near $525 before antlerless tags.
