Trout Fishing in Idaho and Oregon 2025: Best Spots, Gear, and Tips
Let’s break down some good spots to check out in each state for the upcoming trout opener, talk about what kind of gear works well, and then I’ll wrap it up with what we’ve been targeting lately at Double M Outdoors. If you’re looking to stretch a line this spring, this will get you pointed in the right direction.
Trout Fishing in Idaho 2025: Top Spots and Tips
In Idaho, general trout season kicks off on Saturday, May 25th. It’s always the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. While quite a few rivers and lakes are open year-round, this date opens access to more of the alpine lakes, small creeks, and tighter-regulated areas.
Henry’s Fork: A Fly Angler’s Paradise
The Henry’s Fork is always high on the list. If you’re a fly angler, the Railroad Ranch section is about as classic as it gets. Big, picky rainbows in clear water — it’s technical fishing, but worth it. Drift boats are common on the lower stretches, and there’s solid bank access near Harriman State Park and below Ashton.
Big Wood River: Accessible and Productive
Lake Cascade: Ideal for Beginners and Families
Upper Salmon River: Wild Trout Fishing
Up around Stanley, the upper Salmon River is another one to keep on your list. Dry flies, nymphs, and streamers all get bit. There’s bank access off the road, and some floats are doable if you have the right gear or experience.
Beginner-Friendly Trout Fishing Spots in Idaho

If you’re looking for a spot to take the kids or introduce someone new to fishing, here are a few Idaho options that are stocked and easy to fish:
- Parkcenter Pond in Boise
- Kid’s Creek Pond in Salmon
- Edith Lake in the Magic Valley (short hike required)
These are all places where a basic spinning rod, bobber, and worm setup will do the job.
Trout Fishing in Oregon 2025: Must-Visit Locations
Over in Oregon, the general trout opener hits on Saturday, April 27th. Like Idaho, plenty of water is open year-round, but the late-April opener is still a big deal for a lot of lakes and rivers, especially when stocking ramps up.
Deschutes River: Classic Fly Fishing
The Deschutes River near Maupin is a solid early season option, especially if you’re into fly fishing. The salmonfly hatch gets going in late May, but there’s always something hatching. It’s fly fishing only in the lower sections, and drift boats are allowed (no motors), though plenty of folks just wade in.
Fall River: Tranquil Spring Creek
Crane Prairie: Big Trout Action
Beginner-Friendly Trout Fishing Spots in Oregon
If you’re looking for easy-to-reach stocked water in Oregon that’s good for beginners, try:

- North Fork Reservoir near Estacada
- Timothy Lake up near Mount Hood
- Walter Wirth Lake in Salem
All of these spots are regularly stocked and have plenty of space for bank fishing.
Essential Gear for Trout Fishing Success
If you’re just getting into trout fishing, you don’t need anything fancy. A 6-foot spinning rod, 4 to 6 lb test, some bobbers, hooks, split shot, and worms will catch fish anywhere. Small spoons or spinners work too. For fly fishing, a 4 or 5 weight rod, floating line, and a handful of dry flies and beadhead nymphs will get you started in most places.
What We’re Catching Now at Double M Outdoors
While most folks are gearing up for trout, we’ve been busy chasing the heavy hitters on the Columbia.
Right now at Double M Outdoors we’re running sturgeon trips. We’re talking 6- to 8-foot fish that pull hard and keep the rod bent. We’re using heavy gear in deep water, and there’s plenty of action once they start biting. If you’ve never battled one of these dinosaurs, you’re missing out. This is a catch-and-release fishery, but one you’ll remember.
We’re also dialed in on spring Chinook salmon. Known as springers, these fish are hands down the best-eating salmon of the year. We’re targeting them from the Portland area down to Astoria, depending on tides and fish movement. Whether we’re anchored or trolling, we go where the bite is hot. These trips fill fast once the season opens, so reach out early if you’re interested.
Plan Your 2025 Trout Fishing Trip Today
Before you head out, make sure you’ve got your fishing license in order. Both states offer day and annual options, and if you’re fishing for salmon or steelhead, you’ll need the proper endorsements. Pay attention to barbless hook rules and wild trout restrictions in some areas.
Whether you’re hiking into the backcountry or setting up a chair next to a stocked pond, the 2025 trout opener has something for everyone. If you’re looking for a change of pace or want to hook into something big, give us a shout. We’ll be out there either way.
