Texas spring turkey 2026—Rio Grande and Eastern subspecies by zone, one-turkey counties, upland endorsement, mandatory harvest reporting, and public hunting options from Hill Country to the Brush Country.
Texas Spring Turkey Hunting 2026: North, South & East Zones
Texas spring turkey is county- and zone-specific: the South Zone opens first, then the North Zone, with one-turkey counties, an East Zone for Eastern-type birds, and youth-only weekends ahead of and after general spring seasons (TPWD 2025–2026 hunting season dates). You need an Upland Game Bird Stamp endorsement (see current license materials), immediate tagging, and mandatory harvest reporting within 24 hours statewide (TPWD Wild Turkey regulations). 177 of 254 counties have turkey seasons—verify your county in the Outdoor Annual before you hunt.
- South Zone spring: March 14 – April 26, 2026
- North Zone spring: March 28 – May 10, 2026
- One-turkey counties: April 1–30, 2026
- East Zone spring: April 22 – May 14, 2026
- Spring youth-only: South Mar. 7–8 & May 2–3; North Mar. 21–22 & May 16–17, 2026
When Is Texas Spring Turkey Season 2026?
General spring seasons from TPWD’s published table:
- South Zone: March 14 – April 26, 2026
- North Zone: March 28 – May 10, 2026
- One-turkey bag-limit counties: April 1–30, 2026

- North Zone: March 21–22 and May 16–17, 2026
Because county rules can include spring-only seasons, fall/spring splits, and special proof-of-sex requirements, use the county lookup on TPWD’s Wild Turkey page for your exact tract.

Licenses, Endorsements, Tagging, and Reporting
- Upland Game Bird endorsement is required to hunt turkey (TPWD Wild Turkey)
- Tag turkeys immediately upon harvest—follow digital tag instructions if you hunt with a mobile license
- Report every wild turkey harvest within 24 hours using the Texas Hunt & Fish app or the online harvest portal (TPWD)
Bag composition interacts with zones, seasons, and special county rules—the Outdoor Annual lists annual bag limits and Eastern subspecies restrictions. East Zone counties have additional method restrictions (shotgun and lawful archery only; no baiting) (TPWD Wild Turkey).
Western one-gobbler counties: In designated counties, no more than one gobbler per county per year—check the current list on TPWD (TPWD Wild Turkey).
East Zone and Proof of Sex
East Zone spring hunting targets gobblers during gobbler-only segments; proof of sex rules require a leg with spur, or skin patch with breast feathers and beard, until processing (TPWD Wild Turkey). East Zone counties listed on TPWD include portions of Bowie, Cass, Fannin, Grayson, Jasper, Lamar, Marion, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Red River, Sabine, and Bowie/Red River/Fannin/Lamar have U.S. 82 carve-outs—read the paragraph carefully.
Where to Hunt Turkeys on Texas Public Land
Texas offers Annual Public Hunting permits, drawn hunts, and large wildlife management areas—each with its own season booklet.
- Kerr Wildlife Management Area: Hill Country research and demonstration area with permit and season structures that differ from walk-in private leases—read the APH or draw packet for the year.
- Public hunting lands east of I-35: Eastern birds and dense timber hunts often mean lottery or drawn opportunities—apply during published windows.
- South Texas Brush Country: Rio Grande birds on private leases dominate, but APH tracts occasionally offer spring slots—verify county legality before sunrise.
Start at TPWD Public Hunting and cross-check county season pages. For calling pressured birds, see last-minute turkey hunting advice.
Key Regulations
- Roost shooting is unlawful—TPWD prohibits hunting roosting turkeys by any means (TPWD Wild Turkey)
- Bait: Follow East Zone and general bait rules; when in doubt, hunt clean woods
- Tags and reporting are enforcement priorities—complete both before you field-dress at the truck
Plan Your Texas Turkey Hunt
Texas is not a one-size-fits-all spring season: South Texas Rio Grande hunts favor early March openers, while North Zone hunters may target April strutters in the Hill Country. East Texas Eastern hunts are a different playbook—shorter spring windows and tighter method rules. Anchor planning with the Texas hunting guide and TPWD’s Outdoor Annual.
